The Benefits of Karate Training

Improved Focus and Physical Fitness, more Self-Discipline, and a Positive Outlet for Energy are the benefits of Karate training for Kids.

Stress Relief through Physical Fitness and Valuable new Skills Learned while getting in Shape are some of the benefits for Adults.

An Activity for the entire Family that can be shared in the Dojo and at Home!

In Karate class you are constantly learning new things.  The Belt System reinforces the habits of long and short term goal setting, which is often critical to success in life.  Our programs stress the cultivation of the proper mindset, character traits, and habits that will make one more successful in other areas of life.

OSU!

I could be mistaken, but I believe that the term 'osu' is used exclusively in the art of karate.  Like the Hawaiian word 'aloha', 'osu' has many uses in the dojo--but none more important perhaps, than the firey expression of one's spirit.

HEI WHAT?
I've been searching the internet using 'heiwa-do karate' as my search criteria.  I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of ignorance concerning our art.  The misconceptions, assumptions, and even outright idiocy. But, 'everyone is entitiled to an opinion,' as Soke would tell me.
Soke Hirano did not give the name 'Heiwa-do' to his art.  As with Shotokan Karate, Heiwa-do was not named by it's founder.  Despite similarities, Heiwa-do is not Wado-ryu, though the later is very much a parent of the former.
Soke was given control of the existing Hawaii Wado dojo upon his permanent return to Hawaii in July of 1962.  And did so with the blessings of his teacher, Master Hironori Otsuka.
As far as relationships with the Wado-ryu karate stylew are concerned.  Shihan Masafumi Shiomitsu of Wado-ryu fame, also a direct student of Master Otsuka, maintained a personal relationship with Soke Hirano, up to the time of Soke's death in October of 2009. At Soke's personal request, Shihan Shiomitsu would teach pure Wado-ryu karate to Soke's students. Soke himself had stopped teaching Wado-ryu exclusively and had long ago begun heavily incorporating influences gathered from amongst karate's major styles.
I believe that Soke perceived karate to be a vehicle for personal development, rather than a means to perpetuate ego. Proof of this lies in the fact that for decades, we simply called our art 'JIKC' karate.  Wado-ryu kata, Shotokan kata, Shito-ryu kata, Goju-ryu breathing methods, etc.,...all can be found in the Heiwa-do system.
  (...to be continued.)

JIKC mourns the loss of its beloved founder
On the morning of October 1st, Soke Kiyohisa Hirano, slipped away into history.

I have never sensed a moment of weakness, nor have I ever been witness to anything but his gentle quiet understanding.  In my all to brief conversations with him, he would listen quietly, properly relate the what and the why of my feelings, and then disconcertingly ask me "What is your question?".  He was funny that way,...and wise.  When I felt that my relationship with the organization had hit a crossroad.  It was Soke who all at once gave me permission to leave and find my way, but at the same time told me it was his wish that I remain.  And it is because his generosity of spirit that I have done so.

Shihan Ronnie Woodard, longtime student and close personal friend of Soke Kiyohisa Hirano, has made arrangements to celebrate the many accomplishments of his friend and mentor.
The memorial celebration will take place on October 25th, at the Waikiki Yatch Club.  The celebration will occur immediately following a ceremony at sea.

GET READY NOW!!!

Preparing for competition encourages students to try their very best.  The preparation alone can raise a student's ability to an entirely new level.  Many students are afraid to compete.  Encouragement and support to participate from parents go a long way in helping a student develop the confidence required to overcome this and similar social obstacles that may be encountered elsewhere.

SPECIAL THANKS!
Sensei Bradley Coker for his timely advice, generousity, and vision.  Let's Rock!!!

Karate is a form of "civil combat".  A non-military form of fighting meant to be employed by civilians in order to preserve life and liberty.
Karate is also heavily utilized as a combative sport.  Contests may range from the traditional to the absurd.
The training, mindset and goals of each are mutually exclusive.
