"It may seem difficult at first, but everything is difficult at first."
~ Miyamoto Musashi ~
No Art, no matter how comprehesive, is perfect.
How can they be? Born of human imperfection, like people, each exists according to its gifts
and shortcomings. Like people, some 'Arts' exist to conqueor others, while other 'Arts' attempt to harmonize
and blend with those around them. Art of War, Recreation, Competition, Self-Improvement. Whatever the reasons
for their existence, it is we-- the practitioners of our arts, who are ultimately responsible for it's purpose;
it's benefits; it's detriments. Keep the faith!

Okinawan Karate
Teachers, styles, and
secret techniques
" 'Karate' Kojo told me, 'is not just kicking and punching - this
is for beginners. Karate is a fighting art - not a sport - so one can use any part of the body for striking grappling
and throwing.' "
The following is an excerpt from
Darrell Craig & Paul Anderson's:
SHIHAN-TE
The Bunkai of Karate Kata
"The black belt is supposed to symbolize the expert who has learned not only
the physical and mental aspects of the art, but also the secrets of the bunkai. The true black belt can sense his opponent's
thoughts and anticipate his moves before they occur. He can then react appropriately. He can do this because the
true black belt has spent those hours with his kata, and realizes that each of its bunkai is designed to address specific
situations. This realization becomes instinctive and the responses automatic. The wearer of a black belt who cannot
do this is not a true black belt. He does not possess a deep understanding of the art and has very little to pass on
to the next generation of students."

BOOK OF FIVE RINGS
The definitive Interpretation of Miyamoto Mushashi's
Classic Book of Strategy
An excerpt from the:
"The Book of Wind"
" I care not for the dressings of other uniforms, or the growing of small trees, although these
things have their place. If the school is primarily interested in building up clientele and displays the trophies
won at tournaments (among other things) it gives the student the wrong idea about the Way of the warrior. Essentially,
such a school is trying to sell its wares to the public by using the long sword as a means to accumulate wealth. This
is absolutely not the Way of the warrior. You must understand this if you are to develop your spirit in the proper manner."
"It is important to understand the reasons and philosophies of other systems in order to truly
benefit from my own. I do not hesitate to point these things out to you. Without comparison you have no reference
point with which to judge for yourself and decide how to properly develop your own self. You should study the ways
of others to reinforce your own understanding of yourself. Constantly reevaluate yourself."
